What is a domain name?

Domain names are hostnames that provide more easily memorable names to stand in for numeric IP addresses. They allow for any service to move to a different location in the topology of the Internet (or another internet), which would then have a different IP address.

A domain name is required to give access to your website. It acts like a unique address that allows your site to be located throughout the Internet.

Domain names can have many different extensions. Each domain name extension is the responsibility of a certain registry. For example the .ie ccTLD (country-code Top Level Domain) is handled by the Irish Domain Registry (IEDR ).

Here are some more examples of domain name extensions:
example.com
example.net
example.org
example.biz
example.co.uk
