What is POP3?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol v3) is a protocol used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server. Most e-mail applications (or e-mail clients) use the POP protocol.

Once e-mail messages are retrieved using POP3, they no longer exist on the remote mail server, but will remain on the local computer until deleted. This allows a person to view there already retrieved messages even when "offline" and not connected to the internet.
