The Internet may Reach Breaking Point by End of Year
According to new research, the Internet may be close to reaching its
breaking point, and that the increased amount of video downloads may
become the cause of the Internet collapsing.
“The unrelenting growth in Internet traffic during 2007 may
overwhelm some of the Internet’s backbones: the terabit-capable
pipes connecting continents," said Igal Brightman, global
managing partner at Deloitte.
It is thought, a lack of investment and the growth in heavier data
traffic like Voice-over-Internt-Protocol (VoIP) calls and video
downloads are to blame.
The impact may become most noticeable by slow-down of service, and an
unexpected surge in video downloads could escalate the inconvenience
into a full-scale outage for some users.
